British Airways chose a high pressure water mist system for fire suppression at London’s busy Heathrow Airport. The installation protects critical operations within the busy data centre of the international airline. BA decided to install a high pressure water mist fire suppression system to protect their rotary UPS power generation machinery at their data centre in London Heathrow.

The project was deemed critical as the UPS generators work in conjunction with incoming mains power to ensure that BA can process the huge administration processes associated with running a major airline without power interruption.


Fireworks designed, supplied and installed a local application style system using our engineering skills to design and fabricate steel frames around each UPS machine to mount the piping and water mist nozzles to give the best protection.


The frames were designed to be removable without disconnecting any pipework to allow for annual machinery maintenance without the need for shutting the entire mist system down and without the requirement for repeated pipe removal.

How it works:
When water is forced through nozzles at high-pressure, a fine mist is formed that has a two-fold extinguishing effect – it rapidly cools down the fire and starves the flames of oxygen to suppress the fire, reduce damage and prevent re-ignition of the fire.



  • • With fewer nozzles required thanks to optimized spacing and the need for only one pump unit for all applications installation cost and time as well as required service interventions are considerably reduced.

  • • 30% fewer components compared to other competing systems mean ours is lighter and more compact. This allows for easier installation, simplified maintenance and 
valuable space saving.

Cost of water supply is significantly reduced due to less piping, reduced water demand from the water supply. High Pressure water mist systems use up to 50% less water when compared to low pressure water mist systems and up to 80% less water when compared to traditional sprinklers.
