Clapham Junction is the busiest rail station in Europe, with up to 200 trains and 430,000 passengers passing through each day.

Project requirements

Clapham Junction required fire protection for retail outlets located in the station’s  main concourse  The solution needed to be able to suppress fires fast and reduce the spread of smoke through the busy passenger concourse in the event of fire.

Limited space was available was for the pump and water tank. The system also needed to be flexible enough to expand and protect additional  retail outlets.

Why Fireworks Fire Protection?

The client and contractor chose Fireworks as they needed water mist experts experienced in the challenges of protecting rail facilities, and able to design a compact, future-proof  system. Fireworks’ engineers were able to perform high quality installation rapidly and adapt to changing schedules.

Water mist system design and installation

Fireworks designed and installed a water mist system for Clapham Junction, powered by a high pressure water mist pump, connected to thermally activated water mist nozzles located in each of the retail outlets. The system can be extended to protect additional retail areas in the future.

In the event of the heat in one of the retail outlets reaching a pre-defined safe temperature, the pump is activated and water mist is emitted through the affected nozzles only. The fire is rapidly cooled and suppressed. High pressure water mist’s ability to rapidly reduce  the spread of smoke is a major life safety benefit for rail facilities and other applications.

Fireworks’ engineering teams conducted installations in the station’s  overbridge concourse between  midnight and 4am, to avoid disruption to passengers.
