Fielden House is a 1930s heritage office building in the heart of London’s Westminster conservation area. Fireworks was recently chosen to design, install and commission a water mist fire system to protect all seven floors, including two basement levels.
Flexible fire protection systems that preserve architectural integrity
Fireworks is the UK’s most experienced water mist fire protection installer for both heritage and modern buildings. Our in-house designers and engineers were able to deliver a fire protection system able to preserve the building’s architectural integrity and provide optimum fire safety.
Fireworks’ ability to provide a flexible fire protection system that can easily be adapted to open-plan floor spaces, or reconfigured to different office layouts was essential.
With Fielden House, the ability to use a much smaller water tanks than would have been possible for sprinklers was also key to the design.
Water mist fire protection system design
The building’s seven floors comprise offices, plant and switching rooms. All areas are protected by heat-activated water mist nozzles connected to a centralised water mist pump. If the temperature reaches 57°c in office areas or 68°c in plant or technical rooms, the water mist pump is activated.
Wet section valves were used for office areas, and pre-action valves for plant rooms, switch rooms and machinery areas. Pre-Action areas are double interlocked with the main fire alarm for heat and smoke activation.
If the pump is activated by one of the water mist nozzles, water flows through the relevant section valve. The flow switch detects this and a signal from the flow switch to the fire alarm panel shows the exact section affected. Water mist is emitted at pressure through the affected nozzle(s) only. Fire and heat are rapidly suppressed, and the spread of smoke is hampered. As very small amounts of water are used, normal business operations can quickly be resumed.
